Watford Man and Van Health and Safety Policy
Watford Man and Van is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and transport activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with moving, loading, transporting and unloading goods for residential and commercial customers.
Our aim is to prevent injuries, ill health, damage to property and avoidable disruption by applying sensible and practical safety standards in every aspect of our work.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Watford Man and Van rests with the company management. Management will ensure that adequate resources, information, training and supervision are provided so that work can be carried out safely and in compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and good industry practice.
Employees at all levels have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Every team member must follow company safety procedures, use equipment correctly, report hazards, and co operate with management in achieving safe working conditions.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We will carry out suitable and proportionate risk assessments for our removal and man and van activities. This includes, but is not limited to, assessing risks associated with manual handling, working in and around vehicles, moving large or awkward items, working at height when necessary, and operating in customers homes, offices and shared areas.
Where significant risks are identified, we will implement and maintain safe systems of work. These may include the use of appropriate handling equipment, team lifting procedures, route planning, traffic management at loading points, and specific methods for handling fragile, heavy or high value items. Risk assessments will be reviewed regularly and whenever work practices or conditions change.
Manual Handling and Lifting
The nature of our removal services means manual handling is a core part of our operations. To reduce the risk of injury:
We will provide manual handling training to staff, including guidance on correct lifting techniques, team lifts, use of trolleys, skates and straps, and recognition of personal limits. Where items are too heavy, awkward or unsafe to lift manually, suitable equipment or additional staff will be used, or the task will not proceed until it can be completed safely.
Employees must follow safe lifting techniques, avoid rushing tasks, and request assistance whenever a lift cannot be carried out safely alone. Items that present special risks, such as large appliances, pianos or bulky furniture, will be assessed individually and moved only with appropriate planning and controls.
Vehicle and Driving Safety
Our vehicles are essential to our man and van and removal services, and their safe operation is a priority. We are committed to maintaining our vehicles in a roadworthy condition, ensuring they are regularly inspected, serviced and cleaned so they remain safe for staff, customers and other road users.
Drivers must hold valid driving licences, follow all road traffic laws, and drive responsibly with consideration for changing weather, road and traffic conditions. Loads will be properly distributed and secured to prevent movement during transit, with particular attention paid to heavy, tall or fragile items.
No employee should drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that could impair their ability to drive safely. Mobile phone use while driving must comply with the law and company rules. Journey planning will take account of realistic timeframes and appropriate rest breaks.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
Our teams work in a variety of locations, including private homes, offices, storage facilities and public spaces. We will take reasonable steps to protect customers, visitors and members of the public from risks arising from our work.
This includes keeping access routes as clear as possible, using safe lifting paths, monitoring doorways, stairs and corridors, and taking care around children, pets and vulnerable persons. Where needed, our staff will identify and communicate temporary hazards such as trip risks, trailing straps or equipment in walkways, and will minimise noise and disruption as far as reasonably practicable.
Work Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
Watford Man and Van will provide suitable tools, handling aids and protective equipment to enable staff to work safely. This may include moving trolleys, lifting straps, furniture blankets, protective gloves, safety footwear and any other equipment appropriate to the task.
All equipment will be maintained in good condition and inspected regularly. Employees must use the equipment provided, follow the instructions given, and report any defects or concerns immediately so that the item can be repaired or replaced.
Training, Communication and Supervision
We recognise that training and clear communication are essential to safe working. New employees will receive an induction that includes our health and safety expectations, safe working procedures and emergency arrangements. Ongoing training will be provided where required, particularly in manual handling, safe vehicle operation and the use of equipment.
Supervisors and experienced team members will monitor work practices on site, provide guidance, and intervene if unsafe behaviour or conditions are identified. Health and safety information will be communicated through briefings, toolbox talks and written procedures where appropriate.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses
All accidents, injuries, dangerous occurrences and near misses must be reported as soon as possible to management. This allows us to provide any necessary first aid or medical assistance, meet our legal responsibilities where reporting is required, and investigate the circumstances to prevent recurrence.
We will record and review incident information, looking for patterns and underlying causes so that improvements can be made to equipment, training, procedures or supervision.
Wellbeing and Fitness for Work
Watford Man and Van recognises that the physical nature of removal work can be demanding. Employees must present themselves fit for work and inform management of any medical condition, fatigue or other factor that could affect their ability to work safely. We will take reasonable steps to adjust tasks or working methods where possible to support staff wellbeing and reduce the risk of strain and fatigue related injuries.
Policy Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated whenever necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance, our operations or lessons learned from incidents and feedback. We are committed to continually improving our health and safety performance and to maintaining a strong safety culture throughout the company.
Every employee and contractor working with Watford Man and Van is expected to support and uphold this policy, ensuring that safety remains an integral part of our removal and man and van services.
